Some businesses remain open despite weather
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) —
Flooding and the threat of heavy winds and rain made for a quiet day in surf city and topsail beaches and many of the businesses were closed Monday.
Surrounded by a sea of empty stores, the open sign of Surf City Florist was burning bright. Judy Matteson, the store’s owner says the building withstood Hurricane Fran, so this weekend wouldn’t be a problem.
“In ’96 when the hurricanes came through, we actually stayed in this building, so i figured that we would be fine because it didn’t flood during ’96 and it doesn’t come over our dunes,” said Matteson.
In Hampstead, Olde Point Golf and Country Club is closed due to flooding and they said it will be a few more days until everything is up and running again.
