RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — State election officials say fewer than 1,000 North Carolina voters may have received a later voter registration notice in error ahead of the 2025 municipal elections.

Some voters recently received letters from their county boards of elections stating their voter registration application was submitted after the October 10 deadline. However, officials say those voters did not actually submit late applications.

The State Board of Elections said local elections staff made administrative updates to voter records after the deadline as part of routine list maintenance. Those actions mistakenly triggered the “late registration” notices.

No voter registrations were canceled, and officials say the error will not affect anyone’s ability to vote in this year’s elections.

The State Board of Elections has directed counties to temporarily stop sending the notices while technical changes are made to the state’s voter management system to prevent further errors.

Voters who received the letter can check their registration status using the State Board’s online Voter Search tool or by contacting their county elections office.

Early voting continues through 3 p.m. Saturday, November 1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 4.
