BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says South Brunswick High School was placed on lockdown Friday morning following reports of a potential violent incident.

The sheriff’s office says the lockdown was out of an abundance of caution while deputies responded and cleared the campus.

As of 11:15 a.m. on Friday, the all clear call was given and the lockdown was lifted for both South Brunswick High School and South Brunswick Middle School.

The incident appeared to be a swatting call according to deputies, a false report intended to prompt a large law enforcement response. There was no threat to students or staff.

A thorough sweep of the school was conducted to ensure the safety of everyone.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says they are aware of similar false reports have been occurring at educational institutions nationwide.

Brunswick County Schools announced all field trips planned for South Brunswick High School will be rescheduled for a future time due to Friday’s lockdown. The district will have more information regarding this as it becomes available.

The school-day is continuing as scheduled but administrations and counseling staff are on-sire for students who need support.

“We would like to commend our students and staff for their cooperation and for following our safety protocols with professionalism,” the district said in a statement. “We also want to thank our families for their patience and for allowing law enforcement the space needed to resolve the situation safely”.
