(WPDE) — South Carolina’s newly-passed ban on ‘Carolina Squat’ car modifications goes into effect Sunday.

Back in May, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed Senate Bill 363 into law after the bill flew through both chambers with very little opposition. SB363 prohibits drivers from operating vehicles that have their front fenders raised or lowered four or more inches from the height of their rear fender — known locally as the Carolina Squat.

Starting on Nov. 12, Carolina Squatters might get pulled over and receive warning citations. It’s not until May 10, 2024 that police will begin writing tickets, which will start at $100 and escalate from there, ultimately leading to a license suspension after repeat offenses.

North Carolina and Virginia have also banned the Carolina Squat, saying it makes it too difficult to see over the vehicle’s dashboard.
