South Columbus Stallions trying to step it up for 2-A East Finals
TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — South Columbus edged East Bladen 42-41 on Friday in the third round of the high school football state playoffs. On Monday afternoon we stopped by football practice at South Columbus to get the scoop on the team as they prepare for the 2-A east finals this Friday at home against Edenton Holmes. “We had beaten East Bladen earlier in the season,” South Columbus head coach Russell Dove told WWAY. “Early in the season teams are growing, teams are getting better and to be able to come back and to beat a good East Bladen team twice in the same year was pretty good and to be able to go onto the eastern championship is satisfying. The kids played lights out on both sides of the ball. Being that type of game to have a finish like it was just awesome to be a part of.
“From conference to the first playoff game to the second to the third we never let em get the big head. We never have. Yeah we have a good running back, yeah we have a good quarterback, but this crew just meshes really well, in the locker room in the school halls and it’s a pretty special team.”
South Columbus recently has been lighting up the scoreboard on offense. “We’re planning on putting up points like we’ve been doing,” South Columbus QB Robby Spencer told WWAY. “We just have to hold them. They (holmes High) do the triple option, kinda like Whiteville. So we’re trying to hold them as much as we can.”
South Columbus running back Dennis Leggett wouldn’t mind a high scoring affair on Friday. “Nobody thought we would be here,” Leggett said. “Nobody thought we would get this far. We proved everyone wrong.
