Southeastern Community College holds groundbreaking for educational greenhouse

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A groundbreaking ceremony held on Monday to mark the start of growth at an area community college.

A project is now underway to build a greenhouse on the campus of Southeastern Community College in Whiteville. Money for the project came from a nearly $375,000 grant, provided by the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

Chris English is the President of Southeastern Community College. He said the 30×60 ft. greenhouse will be used to give hands-on training to students studying agriculture and horticulture.

“So, it allows the student to receive training in zone climates, zoned areas. So, that they can grow different vegetations and understand the advanced technologies that comes with a greenhouse, and greenhouse operations, and greenhouse production,” English said.

State Representative Brenden Jones attended Tuesday’s groundbreaking.

He said this project will foster agricultural education and workforce development in Columbus County.
