Southport Board of Aldermen discuss budget gap, water and sewer merger

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The Southport Board of Aldermen held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the city’s budget while looking to close a $589,256 budget gap.

The gap stems from the loss of water and sewer revenue after a merger with the county.

On Tuesday, the State Treasurer’s Local Government Commission approved the merger, which will have the county take possession of Southport’s water and sewer assets “and assume responsibility for operations, customer service, and financial liabilities related to the water and sewer system of the town.”

The merger is set to become effective on June 30.

Another point of discussion is merging two part-time event planner positions into one full-time position.

The board will meet again to discuss the budget further Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.
