Southport Board of Aldermen discuss priorities for old city hall restoration

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Southport’s board of Aldermen met Monday to discuss the future of the former city hall building.

The 19th century building on East Moore Street served as a Brunswick County Courthouse until 1970, and then as city hall until 2014.

The city partnering with the nonprofit Up Your Arts to restore the building, which will be used as a community performance arts space.

The new building will also house the board of alderman’s chambers on the second floor. On Monday, board members laid out their priorities for the building moving forward.

Board Member Frank Lai noted one of the city’s main concerns is making sure board members have full access to the building for meetings during weekdays.

“During that weekday period of time, we never know. Cause a lot of times we don’t know where we’re going to meet because some other function can kick us out,” Lai said.

The board of aldermen will meet again with Up Your Arts to discuss whether the city’s requests can be met while also achieving Up Your Arts’ goals for the space.
