Southport Board of Aldermen votes to extend contract with NC Wildlife Commission
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The Southport Board of Aldermen has voted to extend a contract with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to potentially prevent the development of over 400 acres of land.
A year ago, the city began discussions with the commission regarding the transfer of the land.
Initially, a deadline was set for March, but as the deadline approached, the commission requested more time to complete necessary surveys and finalize the deal.
After some pressure, the Board of Aldermen decided to extend the contract, allowing additional time for the commission to finalize the agreement.
The land will be designated as a conservancy due to its location within the Sunny Point Blast Zone, which makes development impossible.
