Southport explores paid parking options

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — City leaders in Southport are discussing the possibility of implementing paid parking.

On Monday, the Southport Board of Aldermen heard a presentation from Otto Connect, a parking management company. Representatives from the company outlined potential parking rates, including options for “premium” spots that could cost more.

City Manager Noah Saldo said no decisions have been made. He emphasized that the city is in the early stages of considering new revenue sources.

“As we look over the next ten years what capital investments are going to be needed we wouldn’t be able to fund all of those in one year or even over a few years so this is a great way to look for new streams of revenue to be able to invest in some of these key projects that we really need over the next few years,” Saldo said.

Saldo said the city is exploring multiple parking options with various service providers. City officials are also looking for ways to help fund road improvements and cover an estimated $30 million in stormwater system needs.
