Southport Fire Department 9/11 memorial preparation

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — On Wednesday in Southport, they will honor the fallen heroes of 9/11 with a different display this year.

Previously, they’ve displayed fire boots honoring hundreds of first responders who lost their lives in 2001.

This year, the company that provides the boots were unable to supply them.

Instead, the Southport fire department will be displaying 343 pictures of the firefighters, police officers, and EMS people who lost their lives on 9/11.

Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew explains why they take time each year to mark this somber occasion.

“I think that we all need to remember September the 11th, 2001 because our firefighter brothers paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we never can forget what happened on that day,” Drew said.

The ceremony starts at 9am at the fire department headquarters on North Howe Street, but the display will be up for most of the day.

Drew adds that 4 flags will be dropped on Wednesday at the time of each crash.

People are encouraged to stop by and pay their respect.
