Southport Police Department moving near the Walmart intersection on Hwy. 211
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The Southport Police Department is moving to another temporary home. Southport’s Police Department is currently located off N. Howe Street.
Over the next few weeks, it’ll move down the road near the Walmart intersection on Hwy. 211.
Major Tony Burke said in its current state, it’s difficult being grouped with other city departments. He said the department needs to stand alone, allowing for a smoother workflow.
He said the department’s move will allow for another agency to come in, though he’s unsure right now what will take its place.
“Part of the reason for it is to get out of here to allow room for development in this building they’re going to redesign, hopefully. But it gets us out gets us in our own facility so we can function a little more efficiently,” Major Burke said.
Major Burke said the ultimate goal is to have the police department stationed in downtown Southport. But finding available land and funds to construct a building suitable for a police department has been difficult.
