Southport reopens and looks to rebuild community and tourism after mass shooting

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — More than a week after the mass shooting at American Fish Company, many Southport residents are trying to move forward.

Sales associate Judy Luff works at Ocean Outfitters in Southport.

She says more people are slowly starting to make their way back.

“I think just this first couple of weeks, month, might be a little rocky, but we’ve seen an increase of people in town in this second week past the event,” said Luff.

While some visitors may be drawn by the tragedy itself, Luff believes the city’s sense of comfort will return.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who will come just to see, but I feel like once we have gotten past a month or so and then it slows down, it’ll be more local people who feel extremely comfortable here,” said Luff.

Southport Mayor Rich Alt says businesses reopening is a step toward healing.

“It’s essential that businesses open up and people have the opportunity to reengage other human beings. Human beings need other human beings; if you’re locked in your house it does you no good physically or mentally, and so the store owners are doing that,” said Alt.

Mayor Alt says Southport is strong and the community is moving forward together.

He says you’ll also see increased police patrols around the waterfront and downtown; a visible presence to help keep residents and tourists safe.

“I feel very comfortable that the tourists will return to Southport. We’re going to increase police presence,” said Alt.
