SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The City of Southport is seeking community input as it develops a Community Resilience Project Portfolio designed to help the city better prepare for flooding, severe storms, coastal hazards and other challenges that could affect the community in the future.

The project is being developed through a grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). City officials say public input will be an important part of identifying the community’s most pressing risks and determining which resilience projects should be prioritized.

Residents and community members are invited to attend a public meeting on Wednesday, September 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay Street. The meeting will be a drop-in format, allowing attendees to stop by at any time during the three-hour period.

During the interactive meeting, participants will have an opportunity to:

  • Identify places, services and community assets that are most important to protect.
  • Share concerns about flooding, storms and other hazards.
  • Discuss challenges facing Southport today and those the community may face in the future.
  • Provide input on potential resilience projects and investments.

The city is encouraging everyone connected to Southport to participate, including full-time and part-time residents, business owners and employees, property owners, visitors and other community members.

The goal is to use local knowledge and community priorities to help develop projects that can strengthen Southport’s ability to withstand hazards and adapt to future challenges.
