Speaker & Deputy Majority Leader tour schools to discuss potential $1.9B bond
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– Speaker of the State House Tim Moore and Deputy House Majority Brenden Jones is bringing hope to schools. He is pushing a $1.9 billion construction bond that would bring more than $9 million to Columbus County.
Moore says this proposed bond will be divided to support every education level. K through 12 would receive $1.5 billion, community colleges would receive $200 million and universities would get $200 million.
Moore hopes this will pass the house. If so, it would take about 2 years before schools see action. Columbus County Superintendent Jonathan Williams says his county’s schools desperately needs this money.
” It’s all about building safe facilities so they can maximize their education potential,” said Williams. “We feel like we’ll do that in time.”
Williams says some schools in the county are over 80 years old. Newer schools will enhance the safety measures with high tech security. If approved, this money will be a helpful contribution to the county’s future construction plans.
