Jonathan Frye, one of four recruits who signed national letters of intent to play basketball at Appalachian State during the NCAA’s early signing period last November, said that he was granted a release from his commitment yesterday.

Frye said that he requested the release to reopen the recruitment process and explore other possibilities.

“I talked to my family about it and felt that it was the best thing for me to do at this point,” said Frye, a 6-4 wing player from Greensboro. He was the Mid-State 3-A Conference player of the year last season as a senior at Northern Guilford.

His request came after a coaching-staff change at ASU, when Buzz Peterson left April 16 to become the head coach at UNC Wilmington and assistant Jason Capel was named his successor.

Frye said that he hasn’t decided where he will play next season, and that he wants to see who is interested. He said that there are no conditions to the release to preclude him from playing at UNC Wilmington if he chooses.

“I know the whole coaching staff down there, so I’ll definitely talk to them, but as of right now I’m not leaning that way or anything right now,” Frye said.

And, Frye said, he has not ruled out Appalachian.

“I think it’s a definite possibility,” Frye said. “I’m going to give them every opportunity to recruit me. I don’t know Jason Capel that well, he didn’t recruit me, I talked more with Coach (Matt) McMahon, but I will definitely give them the opportunity. But I want other opportunities if that’s not where I decide I want to be.”

Anthony Thomas, a guard from Winston-Salem Prep and another ASU signee, said yesterday that he has yet to make a decision but that he is leaning toward staying at ASU.

“I haven’t made a final decision yet but that’s big that Coach Capel got the job,” Thomas said. “That does factor into my thinking, and that’s still my No. 1 option.”
