Spring cleaning for the Azalea Festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Community members grabbed trash pickers and garbage bags at the 17th annual Azalea Sweep.

The event takes place prior to the North Carolina Azalea Festival. Committee members, officers and azalea princesses gathered to clean up parts of downtown in preparation for the Azalea Queen.

Organizers of the event say planning for these events take all year long.

“We start as soon as one ends, we start again with the next one. So we’re always keeping in contact with our volunteers, we’re making sure that we have sponsors to help us out, like Keep American beautiful, and Keep New Hanover County Beautiful, and River-watch and then we have lots of people that donate for us for this event,” Cathy Luna, Azalea Sweep co-chair, said.

The turnout was overwhelming according to Azalea Sweep co-chair, Ingrid Corbi.

“We have about 200 volunteers this year for the Azalea Sweep, so we’re very proud of the community’s support,” Corbi said.

The clean-up ended with a lunch provided to the volunteers that helped.
