UPDATE: Suspect in custody after standoff at Wilmington apartment complex

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — 9:34 a.m. UPDATE: The suspect is now in custody.

Wilmington police and a SWAT team are involved in a standoff Friday morning at an apartment complex on Kerr Crossing Apartments.

Authorities were called around 4:30 a.m. to the 300 block of Kerr Avenue following a dispute between two family members, identified as a brother and sister. The were called to the same apartment around 3:40am but the situation appeared to be settled and there was no need for arrest. Police say the brother forcibly entered the apartment and then refused to come out.

Lieutenant Greg Willett says swat assisted with Gaymon who was barricaded inside.

“We surrounded the apartment, began negations, determined he was in the apartment. We had some assistance of family members. We wanted to make sure this was resolved peacefully and amicably. That’s the end of the day, that’s the goal. We have warrants on somebody we have to serve those warrants,” Willett said.

The man has active warrants for his arrest, according to a Wilmington Police Department spokesperson. Officers remain on the scene attempting to take him into custody safely.

No injuries have been reported.

Again, this didn’t end with any police officer getting hurt, any citizen getting hurt, and it didn’t with the suspect getting hurt. So at the end of the day, that’s the goal,” Willett said.

Officials urged residents in the area to avoid the scene while law enforcement works to resolve the standoff.

In the meantime, nearby residents, like Kiyra Jones had to be evacuated.

“These people came in here and was getting everybody outta here. I don’t really mind but people got kids and stuff like that. Some people couldn’t go to school, some people couldn’t go to work,” Jones said.

Around 9:30 a.m., Hykeem Gaymon, 35, of Wilmington was taken into custody.

Police say this was not a hostage situation, as the sister was outside, so they were able to take their time and not rush it.

“Time is usually on our side here. This situation, like many of these situations, it only involved the suspect who was in the apartment and who could be armed,” Willett shared.

Jones urges people to stay out of trouble.

“Stay outta trouble cause like this ain’t it. This ain’t what we are trying to show the world. Do better…just do better.”

Additional details will be released as they become available.
