Stargell Foundation makes donation to Novant Health New Hanover Regional

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Willie Stargell Foundation has awarded $120,000 to the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation.

The money will fund the Willie “Pops” Stargell dialysis center, named after the Pittsburgh Pirate legend in 2006

Stargell spent the last five years of his life receiving dialysis treatments.

One in 7 American adults suffer from chronic kidney disease.

Ernie Bovio is the president of Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He said this donation will allow the hospital to continue offering help to its patients.

“Yeah, the demand for services continues to grow and grow and we’re limited in our ability to continue to invest without having philanthropic support,” Bovio said. “And so this is just a great way for us to accelerate creating capacity and access for our patients.”

Including Tuesday’s donation, the Stargell Foundation has donated $875,000 to the hospital.
