State Board of Elections holds open forum in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Both opponents and supporters of the new NC voter ID law came out tonight to the New Hanover County Government Center to voice their opinions on the rules surrounding the law. The law will go into effect in 2016.

“We decided to do 9 across the state so folks in different geographical areas could still participate in the process. Even if you’re not in Raleigh, we want to know what your comments are,” said Josh Lawson a State Board of Elections spokesman.

The Board will take the comments made at each of the 9 forums into consideration before finalizing the official rules.

“I really trust the rules committee. I think they worked hard to create fair rules. There’s some things that I’m sorry that are in there. But I trust them and I think they will listen,” said Maggie Parish a resident of New Hanover county.

The state board said there will be no change to the law itself, but training curriculum is currently in development and training for county Board of Elections will likely begin in January.
