State issues official warning to Columbus Co. Animal Shelter

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Animal Shelter has received a formal warning from the state citing 6 different instances of animal mistreatment back in March.

On May 6, the shelter received written warning with claims of animals living in poor conditions and being refused veterinary care while at the shelter. But animal control director Rossie Hayes said that’s not the case. He said he and the staff are always looking out for the animals in their care.

“If we know that there’s something wrong with them, we take the to the vet,” said Hayes.

But this is not the first time this shelter has come under fire regarding the conditions for the animals. Last year there were allegations of neglect and a roach infestation. Hayes said his staff have been working diligently to make improvements where they can.

“We just have to do so much at a time. We’re not no rich county.”

Hayes added that he is sending several of his staff to training seminars this year to help them learn to care for the animals even better. He insists these allegations are not correct and the animals are in good hands.

“We’re not veterinarians. We do the best and everything we can. If we see that they need care, we’ll take it to the vet,” said Hayes.

Hayes said the shelter is working on addressing all of the cases cited on the warning. He said many of those in question have already received medical attention. The shelter has until the end of the month to respond to the warning.
