Stoney Creek Plantation residents flooded by PTC 8 in need of food and donations
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Some residents of Stoney Creek Plantation in Leland are still recovering from Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 last month. The unnamed storm left many people’s homes flooded and unlivable, but some volunteers are helping them to recover.
The neighborhood was not in a flood zone, so most residents didn’t have flood insurance. The neighborhood also experienced extensive flooding after Hurricane Florence in 2018.
Many residents have since resorted to living in RVs in their driveway, renting an apartment, or living on the second floor of their home if they can’t afford to go elsewhere.
Lara Witschen is working to organize fundraisers and bring food to residents who no longer have usable kitchens. Witschen said 26 homes, all on the same street, were affected.
“You know, they’re in a position where they don’t want to see their homes and have somebody else experience the same thing, but yet they don’t want to stay and have themselves experience the same thing,” Witschen said. “So it’s not a good situation for those people. I feel so horrible for them, they’re in an impossible situation.”
If you want help residents of Stoney Creek Plantation, Witschen recommends donating to 86 Hunger Now, a local nonprofit that provides meals to those in need.
