Storyteller reenacts Harriet Tubman’s story
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Civil rights history is embedded in the Wilmington community from Williston High School to the Wilmington 10. This month Cape Fear Community College is bringing a twist to black history lessons.
Joyce Greer embodied the true essence of Harriet Tubman by reenacting her story.
As history tells, Tubman was an escaped slave that helped others gain freedom through the Underground Railroad. But, Greer took the story to a new heights by acting out detailed accounts of interactions Tubman had with slave masters and other slaves.
“I didn’t really know all the pain and suffering she had went through,” said CFCC student Donald Brown. “I guess in school we learn about certain parts but I feel like [Greer] does a good job of like giving us a true understanding of what she went through and the hardships she had.”
CFCC will continue Black History Month education on Tuesday with the film ‘The Red Cape.’
It is a documentary on the 1898 race riots in Wilmington. If you’re interested in attending, below are the details on the film sessions:
Session one will be held at 11 AM in Room 152 of Union Station and session two will be held at 6 PM in Room 170 of Union Station.
