Student Athlete of the Week: Matthew Roberts
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This week’s Student-Athlete of the Week has multiple special talents, getting high marks in the classroom while hitting the high notes for the school choir.
Matthew Roberts is often front and center on the field, serving as a captain for Wilmington Christian Academy’s varsity soccer team or helping lead the baseball team to back-to-back state championships.
But it’s off the field where he lets his talents shine through.
He serves as his class president, ranks near the top of his class academically, was the National runner-up in men’s vocal solos, and a state winner in classical piano solos.
Roberts said it’s his quiet leadership that gets people’s attention.
“You’re not outspoken, everybody’s not always focused on you and so, like sometimes you may be speaking all the time and when you say something that’s like really, really important, nobody really listens cause its like oh, they’re talking again,” Roberts said. “But if I talk, it’s like, oh my goodness, what did he just say cause they want to know what I just said.”
Roberts said he plans to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he will likely be a member of the universities club-level sports.
