Student housing proposed on driving range on Oleander Dr.
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A student housing development could soon replace the golf driving range on Oleander Drive.
Capstone Collegiate Communities met with homeowners that live on Brookforest Rd. and Oakhurst Rd. tonight about their proposal to build duplexes near their neighborhood.
According to project details, the subdivision would be called the Cottages of Wilmington and would cover almost 15 acres. The developers sent the homeowners a flyer that explained their plan to build a 38 building, 155 unit college housing facility.
Homeowner Suzanne Shearer said the developers also want to build a road that would cut through their neighborhood. There streets would no longer be dead ends. That is why she said dozens of homeowners showed up to the meeting tonight to voice several concerns.
“The biggest thing that we’re concerned about is that road cutting through, but even with a development being there at all,” Shearer said. “If we’re looking at a college community being in front of us, we are going to be looking at the noise, the partying, the trash, everything that comes along with a community like that.”
Shearer said this meeting was just for the developers and the homeowners. She said they all plan to go to the city council meeting on November 1 to speak out to the elected officials.
