Student in custody for having loaded gun at school

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  New Hanover County deputies took a middle school student into custody this morning for having a gun.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer says shortly after 8 a.m. a student at Williston Middle School told school resource officers that another student had a weapon. Deputies confronted the student, who handed over her backpack. Deputies found a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun.

Deputies took the 14-year-old girl into custody. Brewer says the investigation continues.

“The safety of our children is our number one priority,” Sheriff Ed McMahon said in a statement. “We are committed to keeping our schools a safe environment.”
