Child Passenger Safety Week kicks off
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sunday was the start of Child Passenger Safety Week, and that means car seat safety for your little ones.
Luckily folks can learn all they need to know about car seat installation through the help of the fire department. Every new employee with the Wilmington Fire Department goes through a week long training process focused on car seat installation and safety.
Firefighter Harris Clark, said what some people don’t realize is how complex installing a car seat correctly can actually be. He said firefighters are there to help teach people how to do it, so they can feel confident keeping their children safe.
“A slight misconception is people think they come by and just get their car seat installed for them, but actually our is to take the knowledge that we’ve gained through our training and to walk the parents through installing it themselves and make sure that they leave feeling confident and comfortable that they can install it themselves without the help of anybody else,” Clark said.
Folks can go to WFD Headquarters, City Station 9, or all county stations to get help with car seat installation. Clark said it is typically best to come between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Car seat technicians will be able to help 7 days a week. The training is free.
