SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Sunset Beach has declared a curfew until 6 a.m. Sunday. Only emergency public safety and maintenance vehicle are allowed on roads in town due to localized flooding and impassable roads.
The Mannon C. Gore Bridge at Sunset Beach closed Saturday afternoon. The town also said the South Causeway leading from the island to the bridge was flooded this afternoon, making it impossible to drive off the island for the time beind.
The town is asking residents to shelter in place and do not try to evacuate the island.
Town Administrator Susan Parker said earlier the bridge would close at 1 p.m. because of strong winds. The bridge closes when sustained wind speeds surpass 50 mph. It is anticipated to open at 10 p.m., weather permitting.
Pending a power outage, Parker says a generator will supply power to the town’s sewer services.
