Sunset Beach Councilman Pete Larkin resigns due to family medical situation

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A member of the Sunset Beach Town Council is resigning halfway through his term due to a family medical situation.
Councilman Pete Larkin made the announcement during a special called meeting of the council on Wednesday, May 14.
“I’ve had a serious family medical situation over the last three months which has demanded the majority of my attention,” Larkin said. “My family situation has now developed into a condition that requires 100% of my emotion and energy. As of this evening, I must resign my elected position here on the town council. It is with disappointment that I’m not completing the remaining two years in my four-year term.”
Larkin was elected in 2023 and was slated to finish his term in 2027.
After thanking Larkin for his dedication and service, the rest of the council voted to put advertisements on the town website for applicants to serve on an interim basis.
The term of the appointment will run until the new Town Council is sworn in this December.
Town leaders plan to discuss and potentially nominate an interim council member on June 2.
