SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Sunset Beach Police Department recently helped a small alligator with a fishing lure caught in its mouth.

The rescue took place at the Carl Bazemore Bird Walk on Shoreline Drive West.

Police say the alligator was caught using a catch pole by Officer Covelli. Further inspection revealed what appeared to be a minnow style lure with treble hooks piercing the roof of the alligators mouth. The lure was removed without further injury and the approximately three-foot alligator was then returned to the same body of water.

“This was a very dangerous situation for the alligator, as it would have been unable to dive for extended times, or be able to properly eat,” a statement read. “We are always appreciative of our officers efforts in saving our local wildlife.”
