Supportive housing community Driftwood apartments celebrates opening

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new supportive housing community is celebrated its reopening in Wilmington on Thursday.

Driftwood apartments were originally built in 2003 as supportive housing and was set to be converted into market-price apartments.

Before that could happen, Cape Fear Collective and the Good Shepherd Center purchased the property for $1.9 Million.

Thursday, the two nonprofits reopened the community as a 15-unit complex for individuals with disabilities or those experiencing chronic homelessness.

Good Shepherd Center Executive Director Katrina Knight said while 15 units may not seem like a lot, its one piece of a much larger plan to address housing insecurity in the area.

“It takes lots of little efforts all combined in order to really move the needle to ensure that all of our neighbors have access to housing and the quality of life that comes with it,” Knight said.

Driftwood Apartments will also have a full-time person on-site, to connect residents with several needs they may have like access to social services, medical appointments, or even where the closest grocery store is.
