Surf City house fire displaces residents
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — A house in Surf City caught fire overnight leaving one family without a home. The fire broke out at the home in the 11-hundred block of S. Topsail Dr. around 8:30 Wednesday night.
When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed with flames and explosions were heard at the fire scene. No one was at home at the time of the fire and no firefighters were hurt.
Surf City Fire Marshal Jonathan Burton said while the majority of the job is done, he and his team are keeping an eye on the scene.
“We’ll just be examining the fire ground for hot spots. If there’s any rekindles, we’ll respond accordingly. There was one other rekindle about 1:53 this morning shortly after the initial fire was under control, that was extinguished,” Burton said.
Burton said it was a team effort between all who arrived on scene in order to stop the spread of the flames. He listed Surf City, Pender County, both Topsail and N. Topsail agencies as helping hands.
“it’s always a collaborative effort with the mutual aid companies to get the fires under control as quickly as possible and limit the spread or damage to any other structure,” Burton said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Burton said the displaced residents were offered Red Cross services, but they declined. He said they are staying with family as of right now.
Burton said there was heat damage to the adjacent structure of the house and vehicles surrounding the residence.
