Surf City swing bridge temporarily shut down due to malfunction

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The Surf City Swing Bridge is temporarily shut down and could remain that way until as late as 9:00 p.m.

Surf City Town Manager Larry Bergman said there was a malfunction during NCDOT maintenance. Bergman said traffic is being rerouted.

The only other bridge on the island is in North Topsail Beach. Town spokesman Allan Libby said traffic is being rerouted to North Topsail Beach and through Sneads Ferry.

Libby originally said the bridge could be back open by 5:30 p.m., but now it appears it’s going to take even longer.
