Surfers take advantage of Matthew’s waves

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — There are some people that actually enjoy the effects of hurricanes — surfers. High winds and rain usually come along with hurricanes, but at the beach, so do big waves.

Surfers could see this as the perfect time to hit the beach with the major swells coming in as early as Thursday.

Waves all along the coastline could be getting up to nearly six feet throughout the weekend.

This of course is great news from surfers. Wednesday, surfers were out and taking advantage of the early swells, but this weekend one surfer isn’t taking any chances.

“I mean this is like, in general this is probably not surfing time because it’s hurricane season,” UNCW student Ellis Kalaidjian said. “So we’re getting a lot of hurricanes and a lot of swell.”

The National Weather Service is issuing a high surf advisory with the chance of rip currents. The advisory is in affect until Thursday afternoon.

Beachgoers are advised to stay away until the storm passes with the high risk of swimming and surfing at the beaches.
