Susi Hamilton sworn in to NC cabinet post

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Susi Hamilton, former representative of District 18, was officially sworn in today as the North Carolina Secretary of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The ceremony took place one week after Hamilton was appointed to the position by Governor Roy Cooper.

Dozens of city and county leaders attended the ceremony, held aboard the USS Battleship North Carolina, to demonstrate their support for the woman who has represented much of Wilmington and Brunswick County.

Her new role will enable her to oversee NC state parks, the NC Zoo, the NC Aquarium, and museums and historic around the state.

Secretary Hamilton expressed excitement for her new position—especially the coastal opportunities.

“Well, I have a background in historic preservation. And I’m a coastal girl. I mean, there’s saltwater in my veins. So I’m particularly excited about the coastal opportunities that we have, the state historic sites that are already here, the preservation work that’s been done here. And I want to emulate that across the state,” she said.

Richard Poole, Chairman of the New Hanover County Democratic Party, says that while he is sad to see Hamilton go, he and his fellow lawmakers are working hard to fill her seat.

Ten people have thrown their hats into the ring. One of them is Andrew Barnhill, who says that, if chosen, he hopes to hit the ground running.

“We would have town halls and listening sessions just like we did on the campaign, to get the opportunity to hear people’s views and work together to fight for Southeastern North Carolina,” he said.

The new District 18 Representative will be selected on Wednesday night. He or she will be chosen by representatives from Brunswick and New Hanover counties.
