WPD: Suspect arrested for trying to shoot at man on school campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man has been arrested after police say he attempted to shoot at another man while on the campus of St. Mary Catholic School.

Wilmington Police Department say the threat was not directed toward the school, staff or students.

Police say Maurice McKoy,30, confronted the victim in the Tileston complex around 8:40 a.m., where he assaulted and threatened him. McKoy attempted to shoot the victim, but his gun malfunctioned. He then disposed of the weapon in a nearby trash can, which officers later recovered.

Officers arrived on scene within four minutes of receiving the call and immediately detained McKoy. Officers found bullets and marijuana on him.

This was an isolated incident, and police say school officials were instrumental in McKoy’s capture.

McKoy is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm on school property, resisting/delaying arrest and possession of schedule VI drug.

He is currently being held at the New Hanover County Detention Facility on a $100,000 secured bond.
