Suspect caught after downtown gas station robbery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man is behind bars after police say he stole cash from a downtown gas station before being bitten by a K-9 when he took off running from the scene.

Wilmington Police say around 4:15 p.m. Monday, Jonathan Stewart, 26, reached over the counter at the Shell gas station at Third and Red Cross streets and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. Officers say the store clerk chased Stewart when he took off running from the store.

Police say a K-9 caught up with Stewart a short time later on Brunswick Street, where officers took him into custody. They say Stewart was then taken to the hospital to be treated for a dog bite before being transported to the New Hanover County Jail.

Stewart faces charges for the robbery, along with resisting arrest and tampering with a vehicle, according to the jail’s website. He is being held under a $5,000 bond.
