Suspect charged after Southport mass shooting; three dead and others injured
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY-TV) — A suspect has been arrested and charged following the mass shooting in Southport late Saturday night at a waterfront bar.
According to court documents, Nigel Max Edge of Oak Island, North Carolina has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder.
A spokeswoman with the City of Southport confirms 3 people were killed and at least 8 were injured in the shooting Saturday night.
Officials said shots were fired around 9:30 p.m. and 911 calls began to come in shortly thereafter.
ChyAnn Ketchum, Southport’s Public Information Officer, said a boat came up to American Fish Company on Yacht Basin Drive, paused and then opened fire on people at the outdoor bar before heading up the Intracoastal Waterway towards Oak Island.
According to an email from the Town of Oak Island, shortly after 10 p.m., the US Coast Guard saw a person matching the shooter’s description loading their boat at the public boat ramp at NE 55th Street in Oak Island.
The Town of Oak Island said the Coast Guard crew initially detained this person, who is being held by the Oak Island Police Department.
They will be turned over to the Southport Police Department, with the NC State Bureau of Investigation providing additional support.
Multiple agencies responded to the shooting, including Southport Police, Southport Fire, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, SBI, ATF, and the DA’s Office.
Edge is due in court on Monday at 2 p.m.
