Suspect in Riegelwood deadly shooting arrested in Raleigh

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Sheriff says a suspect in a shooting has been arrested 48 hours after the alleged homicide in Raleigh.

On the evening of Tuesday, May 27, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 664 Brown Town Road in Riegelwood, in reference to a gunshot wound. Upon arrival and through further investigation, deputies learned that Jonathan Baldwin, 31,  of Clarkton had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Baldwin died at the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office soon identified Quashaun Freeman, 28, of Bolton as the suspect. Detectives claim a verbal altercation between Freeman and Baldwin escalated into a shooting.

On Thursday, May 29, Freeman was located and arrested at an apartment complex in Raleigh.

“He was found to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition at the time of his arrest,” Sheriff Bill Rogers said, adding, “We are grateful for the swift and professional assistance provided by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.”

Freeman is scheduled to make his first court appearance on the afternoon of Friday, May 30.

The investigation remains ongoing., and Rogers anticipates that additional charges will be filed as more information is gathered.
