Target shooting banned at area game lands, geocaching limited during turkey season
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says target shooting is no longer allowed at two area game lands.
The WRC put into effect yesterday a new policy that prohibits target shooting at the Holly Shelter Game Land in Pender County and the Stones Creek Game Land in Onslow County.
Sgt. David Jordan with the WRC said the policy is a result of a couple of factors. He said over the years target shooting has led to many trees being shot up and causing damage. Also, with turkey hunting season coming up, there’s a serious safety concern with people target shooting in the same area as people hunting.
The WRC also announced geocaching will not be allowed in the game lands on days open to hunting during wild turkey season and the statewide spring wild turkey season. Geocaching involves using GPS devices to find hidden markers or containers with a prize.
