Tax season tips: How to prepare

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) –As tax season approaches, many people are feeling the pressure of preparing their returns. We visited Diana’s Tax Ladies in Shallotte to learn what local residents should expect and how they can make the process smoother.

Start Filing Now, But Be Prepared

The team at Diana’s Tax Ladies shared that while you can start filing your taxes now, returns won’t be officially submitted until January 27th.

What documents should you bring?
Before filing, make sure you have the following:

  • Previous tax returns (for first time customers)
  • Income documentation
  • If you’re a dependent or a new customer, a Social Security card will be needed.

Deductions for Storm Damage

For some local residents, this year may bring a chance to claim storm damage as part of their tax return. If you experienced property damage during recent storms, it’s worth documenting the costs.

Sharon Muthig, owner of Diana’s Tax Ladies, explains:

“Bring us your damages—whatever the cost was. We don’t need all of your receipts, we just need dollar amounts. Then we will put that on the schedule and deduct any insurance you’ve recouped from your damages.”

The Importance of Timely Filing

Tax professionals recommend getting organized as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute scramble. One helpful tip from the Muthigs: keep all your important tax documents in one folder to make the filing process easier and faster.
