Teacher of the Week: David Eason

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Our Teacher of the Week majored in History, and then worked in sales along with coaching sports. But that wasn’t enough for David Eason, he wanted something more.

“I started coaching sports and then just feel in love with the aspect of coaching the kids and teaching them and thought I could be a teacher,” Eason said.

Now, Mr. Eason teaches Engineering and Design at Laney High School. Though his class is made up of a couple dozen students, he says the majority of his class is freshman.

“The good thing about my class is that we actually build stuff,” he said. “Most of them don’t want to be sitting here. They want to get up and move around.”

While the students are able to exercise their minds with hands-on engineering and designing projects, Mr. Eason’s love for history isn’t lost on these kids and plays a role in their studies.

“I do my little today in history technology timeline here. I try to get the kids to be thinking about historic issue,” Eason said.

Outside of the classroom the students say he is just as supportive.

The student who nominated Mr. Eason as Teacher of the Week wrote he is “many of the students’ number one fans on the court, diamond, track, or golf course. He sees it as not only a privilege to teach all of his students but to learn from every one of them as well.”
