Teacher of the Week: David Holden
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — This week we stayed in New Hanover County to find our Teacher of the Week.
When we surprise each of our teachers, most of them are a little confused when we show up to their classroom with our camera.
“I didn’t know what was happening. It seemed like a good thing though,” said David Holden.
Mr. Holden teaches 11th grade World History at Laney High School and uses his sense of humor to engage students.
“History wasn’t as fun until Mr. Holden,” said Chaz Cureton. “I’m used to it being boring and just taking notes. But having him, he makes it fun.”
The student who nominated him wrote “he turns learning into a natural event and every kid who has had him as a teacher values his presence in their life.”
“We are in this together and if I’m having fun, hopefully they are too,” said Holden.
Mr. Holden says one of his history teachers at Hoggard taught him how to make learning appeal to students.
“He had a dry sense of humor that I could relate to,” said Holden.
A dry sense of humor he now uses with his students.
“Well I think I’m funny looking to start with, so that helps,” he said as his students burst into laughter. “I love this particular age group. They keep you young.”
