Teacher of the Week: Kathryn Nash

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Kathryn Nash says she can be a “mother hen to a lot of little baby chicks” when she describes her class at the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley in Wilmington.

The WWAY Michael and Son Teacher of the Week feels the key to being a good teacher is “building relationships with kids.”  Her students are part of a signature program for New Hanover County schools and work hard to get ready for college or a career.  “You have to make them want to the work,” she says, “because it is challenging.  If you haven’t achieved that the curriculum isn’t going to happen.”

She’s been teaching for several years and advises new teachers to remember not to be intimidated by the minutiae of the job.  Instead she says to “focus on the kids and the curriculum will come naturally.”

Her goal for all her students is to remember her as a teacher who worked hard and to come back and tell her “all the great things they have accomplished over the last 15 to 35 years.”
