Teacher of the Week: Kiersten Wildeboer
CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — Coach Kiersten Wildeboer gets kids up and active over at Castle Hayne Elementary. She said she had teaching in her blood.
“It started when I was seven,” Wildeboer said. “My parents were both educators. My mom was an elementary and high school teacher, my dad was a high school and then went to the college level.”
This health and physical education teacher has more than 20 years experience working with kids at all different levels and says phys. ed. is the perfect combination of her two passions, teaching and working out.
“It helped me through school. So I’m hoping to reach out to these kids and say you know you might not be the best reader, but if you read and you work hard at that, you know physical education will help that too by showing success and that feels like,” Wildeboer said.
She said working with elementary aged kids is all about exploring.
“Being on their level, making sure that they get to explore, because some of them have never touched different types of textures and movements and things that way and you want to give them the experience and see what latches on and what they like,” Wildeboer said.
Wildeboer said kids need physical education just as much as any of their other classes and she does her best to make getting active fun for all of her students.
