Teacher of the Week: Kim Golder

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Sitting at a desk learning English, math, or even science day in and day out can be very repetitive for anyone, especially an elementary school student.

To engage her students and keep their focus, Kim Golder uses a different theme each week to inspire her lesson plans.

“It makes it a little better because I have something exciting on my mind,” said second grade student Ellie Hildredh.

With the Super Bowl just days away, it is a football take in Mrs. Golder’s Wrightsville Beach Elementary School classroom.

“I love football number one and number two it is just going to be fun,” said classmate Parker Joyner.

Everything from spelling words to history, each subject has the popular sport integrated into it. But if there is one lesson Mrs. Golder and her students are extra excited about this week, it’s their math projects.

“They have to plan a Super Bowl party,” said Golder. “They have to go to the grocery store and go shopping and have to add up how much it is going to be, and plan a budget.”

Golder said one of her favorite parts about being in the classroom is watching her students grow, which she said she has seen a lot of with her creative approach to teaching.

“When they want to do it, and they are excited about learning, then they really do a whole lot better and are excited about what they are doing,” said Golder.
