Teacher of the Week: Tara Cumbee

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Tara Cumbee loves making learning fun.

“I think all the time when they’re sitting at their seat, you know, would I want to be doing this in class?” she said.

Sometimes that means getting students out of their seat.

She recently started the Walking Classroom.

“The kids have these podcasts and it just gets them out of their seat for 15 minutes,” Cumbee described. “They walk around the courtyard. They listen to a 15 minute lesson that’s delivered by kids and an energetic teacher.”

Math, history, science and language arts: Union Elementary School’s 4th grade teacher says she loves covering it all.

Her favorite lesson, however, can’t be taught from a text book.

“I want them to know when they leave, anywhere they go in life, they can change the world whatever age they are,” she said.

She does it all for one reason.

“I’m a teacher because I want them to be the best citizens in our community when they grow up, regardless of what profession and what college they want to go to. I just want them to be the most amazing person in society.”
