Teachers react to changes in sex education curriculum
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After the Senate voted early Wednesday morning to accept a House version of the sex education bill, we asked area teachers about the impacts it will have in their classrooms.
The new bill allows for more people to be considered experts when it comes to peer reviewing the material teachers can use in their classrooms. The bill also adds the topic of sex trafficking to the curriculum.
Jayne Emma, a family life educator for New Hanover County Schools says North Carolina is tenth in the nation when it comes to sex trafficking victims. She recently conducted a survey with educators to get their feedback about the new rules.
“We are all in agreement this is a good thing for our kids… safety in our schools, but it can’t be a school effort alone. It needs to be a community effort,” said Emma.
Emma says allowing more experts to review curriculum should not effect things in New Hanover County because their curriculum is already board approved.
