TEAM OF THE WEEK: East Columbus snaps long losing skid
LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — East Columbus only dressed out 23 varsity players on Friday, when the Gators hosted the Trask Titans.
“It was not fun at all,” senior Justin Chestnut said. “Last year was not fun at all.”
In fact East Columbus did not win any games last season, but it only took the Gators three attempts this season to get a victory. East Columbus beat Trask 30-12.
East Columbus head coach Rocky Lewis hopes the Gators won’t have a long wait for their next victory. He hopes the team will be able to build on this win as well.
“It was rewarding to see them come out and execute,” Lewis said. “In the past we might have folded, and they may have said, ‘Here we go again,’ but they showed some mental toughness, and that’s something we’ve talked about all off-season and come away with a good win.”
Winning kills a lot of ills according to Lewis. He’ll even admit he feels a bit of relief.
“It was a monkey off the back,” Lewis said. “When you have a good rushing night you gotta give credit to the offensive line, and they did a real good job of getting push. Our running backs did a good job.”
Let’s give it up for this week’s WWAY-Logo Shoppe Team of the Week: the East Columbus Gators!
