Team of the Week: Hoggard Vikings

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hoggard played well last Friday against Laney, but most of the players still believe their best is yet to come. This includes senior Hunter Louthan.”Laney is a cross county rival,” Hunter Louthan told WWAY. “Hoggard-Laney is always a traditional big game. We always get their best effort and they get ours. Friday night we were better.” “We played well, especially in the 1st and 3rd quarters. Those were two of the best quarters we’ve played all year,” Hoggard head coach Craig Underwood told us before practice earlier this week. “we did a good job executing. I think that has been one of our themes all season. If you’re going to have success you have to execute consistently and we did that offensively in the running and pass games and defensively we played three shutdown quarters.”

Hoggard actually held a 31 point lead in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings ended up taking it 45 to 28. It’s the fifth year in a row Hoggard has been able to beat beat Laney in varsity football and it’s 13 wins over Laney in the last 14 years. Tony Allen scored three touchdowns while sophomore Josh Jones made his first career start at quarterback, passing for 234 yards.

Omar Jones is one of the leaders on the defensive side of the ball at Hoggard. “I love Hoggard football tradition,’ Jones said. “Even though we have a new coach. He has not changed that much. We just come in and work hard and try to get better each week. I feel like the best of Hoggard is is still to come.”

With that let’s give it up for this week’s WWAY – Logo Shoppe Team of the Week. The Hoggard Vikings !!
